132 – Mockingbird

Booked. reviews Mockingbird by Chuck Wendig. In a somewhat unprecedented move, we reviewed a book and its sequel back-to-back. I say somewhat unprecedented because we have reviewed a book and its sequel in the past. Just not one right after the other. But we enjoyed Blackbirds so much that we couldn’t resist taking a chance with Mockingbird right away.

After the review, we talk about the recent news that Chuck Palahniuk has announced his next three releases: Fight Club 2 – Even Fightier, Fight Club 3 – Beach Fightin’, and Fight Club 4 – Fight to the Finish. Which is also the title to the fourth Bring It On movie. Just saying.

Oh, and Skip Papersly is back with a new Booked. News that talks about homophobia and New Jersey hair bands.

Next week is another one of those weeks where we’re not quite sure what we’ll be reviewing, because we have a few options to choose from. It will be a book, and probably one we’ve mentioned on the podcast before. So while you’re waiting, go and get the Miriam Black books that Chuck Wendig was nice enough to write, and KEEP READING!!!

  1. Such enthusiasm; you didn’t even wait a week to get the second review out… unprecedented!

  2. Damn right! We gotta live up to the hype!

  3. Thanks for the continued love, gents. Now I’m going to be nervous as hell if I have to write a Strangeness in the Proportion sequel. It’s interesting you made the comparison. The first draft of Strangeness tried to be a sort of poor man’s Blackbird, even before I knew who Chuck Wendig was (though I was already exposed to his writing as he’s put down many words for White Wolf’s game books and fictions). Simon was not the macabre innocent you know him as, but more of a sardonic smart-ass, a diet-Miriam or faded copy of a Chuck Palahniuk protagonist.

One of the better pieces of writing advice I’ve heard is to learn to write the book only you can write (you’ll drive yourself crazy emulating others too closely). I think the many drafts of Strangeness were me learning that lesson. The biggest change to the second draft was the overhaul of Simon. No one writes a Chuck Wendig book like Chuck (he curses like some kind of sacred obscenity demi-god). And that’s alright. No one writes Joshua Doetsch stories like me (when I let go enough to do so).

Pondering it all now…I think Miriam Black and Simon Meeks should go on a date. They have much to talk about.

Have you folks looked at Wendig’s blog? It’s quite awesome. He gives these lists of writer advice that are fucktastic. The language in them! Imagine Miriam doing a writers’ workshop.
